Do I need Investment Management advice?
Managing your own Investments can be challenging for even knowledgeable investors. Financial markets and investment options have become increasingly complex and volatile. Although information is readily available to all in today’s connected world, it can be time consuming and sometimes difficult to make sense of the conflicting reports, monitor your investments, and make the necessary changes like account rebalancing, to maintain a healthy investment portfolio.
In addition, research, backed by data from the financial crisis, continues to identify the challenges most of us have in monitoring and managing our own investments. Our emotional response to changes in the market tends to result in a buy high and sell low strategy. As professional investment managers, we can maintain a more detached, long view approach to managing your investment portfolio.
Charles Carroll Investment Management Strategy
At Charles Carroll Financial Partners, we seek to maximize the benefits for our Investment Management clients primarily through individual securities. In most situations, individual securities offer the advantage of being associated with lower costs and preferable tax implications when compared to mutual funds.
Why we choose individual stocks over Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)
At Charles Carroll Financial Partners we use Exchange Traded Funds sparingly. While these types of investment are an attractive option for investors because of their high liquidity and low-cost, our experience leads us to treat ETFs with caution. Their high liquidity make ETFs prime targets for large broker/dealers who utilize their liquidity to make wholesale changes to their own portfolios potentially creating inefficiencies in their valuation. For this reason, we believe that stocks are more beneficial for our investors than ETFs.
Our Investment Management Process
Our investment services begin with assessing the current financial situation of the individual client. Gathering this financial information allows Charles Carroll Financial Partners to better understand our client’s requirements, limitations, and opportunities for the management of their assets.
Next, we construct a Living Financial Plan (LFP), which identifies and addresses all of the factors that may affect the individual client’s financial situation. The LFP is developed in conjunction with the client and provides the blueprint for implementing an effective investment strategy.
What factors influence the Living Financial Plan?
A wide range of factors will influence the development of the LFP during the investment management process. These factors include, but are not limited to the following:
- Family resources,
- Familial circumstances
- Current income
- Tax levels
- Risk tolerance levels
- Retirement planning requirements
- Educational planning
- Estate planning
- Cash flow expectations
- Life insurance needs
- Potential philanthropic desires
The LFP will reflect assumptions on the future value of assets should the client adhere to the specifics of the investment plan. This provides the client with a benchmark to assess their progress in attaining stated financial goals and aspirations.
Once the assumptions found in the LFP are agreed to by both Charles Carroll Financial Partners and the advisory client, the next step is to create an Investment Policy Statement (IPS).
What is an Investment Policy Statement?
The IPS outlines the portfolio asset allocation, acceptable investment vehicles, and the roles and responsibilities in the management of the client’s financial assets.
In addition, the IPS will take into account risk tolerance levels specific to the client’s LFP. It also serves to detail the measures and activities that will be employed for monitoring and reporting results, so that both the client and advisor can track the progress towards achieving financial goals and aspirations.
As part of our Investment Management Services, we will request that the client provide discretionary trading authority to us, allowing us to select, transact, and execute security purchases and sales on behalf of the client. As market conditions change, we will use our expert knowledge to adjust the overall client strategy to increase or decrease exposure to certain asset classes.
